| Principles
of Appeal |
There are 17 steps we can follow in appealing
to another person to respond to God's principles.
Paul used these 17 when appealing to Philemon to
forgive Onesimus.
- Paul humbled himself and placed himself
below Philemon. “Prisoner” 1:1
- Paul shared his interest in Philemon's
welfare by thanking God and praying
for him. 1:4
- Paul complimented Philemon in a positive
area that Philemon was developing. “Love
and faith toward all saints”. 1:5-6
- Paul shares the joy he experiences in their
relationship as friends. 1:7a
- Paul shares the blessings others are
experiencing because of Philemon’s ministry.
1:7b
- Paul asks, but doesn’t demand. “Beseech”
1:9a
- Paul appeals by drawing sympathy.
1:9b
- Paul identifies with the situation Philemon
is facing. 1:10
- Paul visualizes the future potential both to
Philemon and himself if he responds. 1:11
- Paul shares the present benefit of
responding properly. 1:13
- Paul does not force the decision but allows
Philemon to think through and make the
decision on his own. 1:14
- Paul visualizes the possible purpose for
the failure and God’s future goal in using
the past failure. 1:15-16
- Paul shares what he would do if he were
Philemon. 1:17
- Paul offers to help with any difficulties
that may arise. 1:18-19
- Paul shares his joy and refreshment in
Philemon's proper response. 1:20
- Paul expected a positive response. 1:21
- To make sure Philemon responds Paul shares
his desire to visit him to see what
decision he has made. (accountability)
